The Locator Server will run on 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2012, 2016 and 2019 Operating systems.  Furthermore, Locator is well suited for installing and running in virtual environments like Citrix XenServer, VMWare, and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Please note that if you are planning to index an IBM Domino Server, you will be required to install the appropriate Domino Client on the server PRIOR to installing the Locator software.

The following table describes the software requirements for a Locator Server:

Category

Requirement

Operating System

Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019. (64-bit versions required)

  • Standard and Datacenter editions are supported.
  • Windows Server Foundation, and Windows Server Essentials (formerly named Windows Small Business Server, or SBS) are NOT supported.

Note: The Authority Service is using HTTP/2. Additional steps may be required to Locator itself may be able to use HTTP/2 run on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R22012 R2, but the Authority Service - and consequently, Supervisor - will not. As Windows Server 2012 will reach the End Of Extended Support status in October 2023, we do not recommend setting up any new Locator 2.11 installations with that operating system.

File System

NTFS

It is recommended to install the Locator Server on another partition than the OS partition.

The cluster size on the data partition should be 4k or larger. A cluster size of less than 4k will result in severe data fragmentation and reduced performance.

Do not share the file folders on the Locator server with other computers on the network.

Domain Membership

The server MUST be a member of the same domain as all users and data sources.

AzureAD and Multi-Factor AuthenticationIf you intend to use AzureAD for authentication or index sources that authenticate against it (eg Exchange Online) and have enabled Multi-Factor Authentication, the Locator server must be added to Trusted IPs in the MFA configuration for your Office 365 tenant ( see Locator and Multi-Factor Authentication in Office 365 / AzureAD for instructions )

Server Role

The server should be dedicated to running only Locator , and not running any other software application.

The server CANNOT be a Domain C
ontroller.

IIS Web Server

During installation, Internet Information Service will be installed.

.NET 4.7.2 Framework

.NET 4.7.2 Framework is required to run Locator .  During the Locator installation, it will be installed automatically if it's not already installed. An internet connection is required otherwise .NET 4.7.2 must be installed prior to installing Locator .

Computer Name

It is highly recommended that you give the Locator Server computer a "user friendly" name (DNS name). You can simplify user access to the Locator Server by using the server name “Locator .”

When the Locator Server is installed, the IIS service is installed and activated. The Locator Web Client can be reached at the URL "http://Locator/search/".  This link will be routed to the web service start address at "http://Locator/search/index.aspx

Anti-virus Software

To avoid performance problems when indexing data, as well as potential indexing data corruption, DO NOT configure anti-virus software to run on the Locator Server.

Please note that some antivirus programs have been determined to be entirely incompatible with Locator and should not run on the host machine under any circumstances:

  • Trend Micro Antivirus
  • Cynet
  • WebRoot SecureAnywhere
  • BitDefender

Assuming all of your data servers and sources are well protected against virus attacks, excluding the Locator Server is not a security risk. All documents will have already been checked for viruses before they are indexed.

If you must run anti-virus software on the Locator server, you will need to exclude the Locator Program Files and ProgramData folders from being scanned. The paths to exclude will depend on the locations you chose for the Locator installation - by default, they are:

  • C:\Program Files\ayfie\Locator
  • C:\ProgramData\ayfie\Locator

Not observing these instructions can result in improper operation, instability, data corruption or the antivirus software rendering your Locator installation nonfunctional in several different ways. For details, please refer to What known issues may occur when running Locator with antivirus software on the same host?
