How can I minimize the impact to the network during indexing?

The preferred way to control network load is by scheduling Locator to index one data source at a time.  Note that index scheduling is defined by the Administrator for each Connection, so controlling the amount of indexing done at one time is easy.  Keep in mind that for most customers, the initial indexing is the most resource intensive.  After initial indexing, most customers find that nightly or mixed scheduling is sufficient to index the new and changed data from the various data sources.

The scheduling function has two options:

  1. Simple Scheduling allows the administrator to choose either 'continuous' indexing, or to set a 'daily fixed time range' for indexing that will repeat every day.
  2. Mixed Scheduling allows the administrator to build a more complex schedule, choosing specific time periods for each day within an entire week.  This is useful in environments where certain days exhibit more or less demand, and the administrator wants to adapt Locator indexing to the business load cycle
